Statistics show that healthy people are less inclined to industrial strife, absenteeism, etc., and attain greater productivity levels. In the UK the onus of maintaining good health and of working safely ceased to be placed solely on the employee some years ago. The trend is similar throughout the industrialised world. Modern laws place a clearly-defined and quite extensive Duty of Care on employers.
Industry's hidden costs
Ignorance is no defence and avoidable serious accidents can prove costly in compensation payments, statutory fines and legal fees.
It is sometimes forgotten that the real intention of the regulating agencies is to improve business efficiency through increased attendance of fully effective staff and to reduce the burden on national economies due to industrial injury and work-related ill health.
